The derailment of a train carrying chemicals on Friday, February 3, in East Palestine, Ohio (United States), had disastrous environmental consequences. According to The Huffington PostAs a result of the incident, local authorities reported that more than 43,700 animals died as a result of the incident, up to the following Thursday.
According to the results obtained by the EnviroScience consulting group, the incident resulted in the death of 38,222 small fish and 5,500 other aquatic animals, based on analysis of four different sites.
Cleaning done
The crashed train contained vinyl chloride, a highly flammable substance classified as a carcinogen, used in the production of plastics. Waterways were affected, but local officials said cleanup efforts have since begun. According to the director of the Ohio Department of Natural Resources, "No additional signs of distress to aquatic life have been observed. In fact, we have already seen the return of live fish to Leslie Run."
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) stated that land animals were not affected. However, some residents reported that their pets and livestock experienced several symptoms such as breathing difficulties or cardiac arrest.
Complaints have been registered
According to The HuffPost, the EPA has required Norfolk Southern, the railroad involved in the incident, to clean up contaminated soil and water resources. The EPA has also asked the company to reimburse residents and businesses for cleanup services to further reassure them. If Norfolk Southern does not comply with these requests, the EPA has promised to intervene to enforce these measures.
Although officials said the air was "safe" and that no pollution had been detected in the municipal water system, some residents filed complaints against Norfolk Southern. Officials sought to reassure the public despite these complaints.
