This Monday morning, the mayor of Nice expressed his disagreement with the installation of the circus on land that falls under the jurisdiction of the metropolis. Later in the day, he met with the representatives of the circus and asked them to leave the town.
This Monday, the mayor of Nice had a conversation with representatives of the Zavatta circus, following his morning statement denouncing the "illegal" installation of the circus on land under the jurisdiction of the metropolis. During this meeting, the mayor declared, "You are in the city of the Nice people, and you are not welcome."
Christian Estrosi opposed the installation of the circus in his city because of the presence of animals in his show and therefore met with the representatives of the circus to ask them to leave the city.
"You are a disgrace"
The exchanges between the circus representatives and the mayor of Nice proved to be tense, with accusations from both sides. In particular, the mayor denounced the illegal occupation of municipal land by the circus and the disruption of traffic caused by the circus' trucks. Christian Estrosi listed several infractions, such as obstructing traffic and occupying public property, and assured that the circus would have to assume the financial consequences of its occupation.
In addition, the elected official recalled having taken a decree three years ago to prohibit the installation of circuses with animals in the municipality. He also denounced the living conditions of animals in circuses such as Zavatta.
"Transporting a hippopotamus in equipment like that is shameful," he told the circus performers. "The way you treat the animal condition, you are a disgrace (...) Now we will explain ourselves in court, and I, the animals, I will protect them."
The mayor of Nice has clearly asked the circus representatives to leave the municipal territory.
"You are outlawed, Mr. Mayor
The circus representatives argue that the mayor of Nice is also in violation of the law, as it allows the use of animals in circuses. One of them declared: "You are outlawed, Mr. Mayor. If I sue you, you're sure to lose right away.
The circus representatives criticize Christian Estrosi's refusal to resort to mediation, which is normally proposed by the prefect in this type of situation. They also noted that the letters they have sent to the mayor of Nice since September have remained without response.
"It's been forty years that we've been in Nice," say the circus performers, who claim to have "the right to work like everyone else.
The circus representatives also reject the allegations of animal abuse made by the mayor of Nice. They even claim that their circus was inspected by the prefectural authorities on the living conditions of their animals when they were in Cannes, and that everything went well.
During this exchange, which took place on the land occupied by the circus, the members of the circus requested the help of the prefect of the Alpes-Maritimes, Bernard Gonzalez, who was also present, to find a solution to the situation.
However, the mayor of Nice was not willing to negotiate. He reaffirmed his position by saying, "There will be no circus with animals in Nice. Then he said that the discussions would continue in court, adding that it could take a few years but that he would not leave the circus representatives alone.
